Dear Families

Huge congratulations to all of our young people who have got their results today. The school is very proud of them.  The grades they have achieved will support them to go forward and pursue a range of Level 3 courses.  A big thank you to all of the staff and to you, our families, who have contributed to and supported those achievements.

There were lots of students who achieved the top grades, our best for four years in fact, and the list could be much longer. We are pleased with the results as a whole but we are particularly pleased with the progress that this Year 11 cohort made from their starting points. You may have read that there is no published progress figure this year but there is a robust set of data that all schools use and it shows that Elmgreen has made good progress with our Year 11s. We pride ourselves on the inclusive nature of our school and just as it is fantastic that our results at the very highest grades are so good, we have students who come in at all levels and we want everybody to progress, whatever their starting points. There are a number of students who have achieved at least two grades higher than they would have been expected to. These students need huge congratulations too (if they are Arla, Joe and Nico, that’s double congratulations). They are:

Again, there were lots of students who made amazing progress but these are the absolute superstars. 

My special mention this year goes to Grygoriy who came from the Ukraine in Year 8 with all the difficulties about being forced from your home and having to adjust to a new environment and education system. I know that our English as an Additional Language Department did lots of initial work with him and we are all proud, as his family must be, that he achieved 987776665. A superb set of results. 

More recently Hammed joined us in October of Year 11 from Nigeria. Clearly Hammed was very able before he joined us but to navigate an entirely different education system in an entirely different country and get such great results is a fabulous achievement. He achieved 99876555. Wonderful.

For all of our students, whatever their grades, this is a gateway to the next phase of their development. That is one of the key functions of education and schooling, to give young people choices. I think that people often forget what GCSE stands for: a General Certificate of Secondary Education. Now of course is the time for more focused, advanced choices. It was great to see so many of our young people signing on to our Sixth Form today to make that next step. Well done to them all.
