Rewarding Achievement

It is important to acknowledge that there will be many opportunities for praise within teaching and learning and that genuine praise will always be well received, however, the significance and impact of structured praise and rewards are the focus of the Elmgreen School’s rewards policy. Rewards should happen every lesson, every day, every term and every year and they should be as relevant for 6th Formers as they are to Year 7 students.

Within the policy there is the notion of group rewards which celebrate the success of teaching groups, tutor groups, year and College groups accountability as well as that of individual rewards which celebrate personal choices, growth and successes. There are a number of ways in which The Elmgreen School will reward achievement:

  • The Elmgreen Tickets
  • Postcards
  • Phone Calls home
  • End of Term Assemblies and Year Group Assemblies
  • KS3, 4 & 5 Awards Evenings
  • Headteacher’s breakfasts
  • Sports Presentation Evening
  • Year 11 Prom

The Elmgreen Tickets

Staff recognise and reward achievement in learning through the presentation of The Elmgreen Ticket to individual students and these are then handed to the head teacher at the end of the school day. There is then a termly draw for prizes in each end of year assembly from all of The Elmgreen tickets collected.

End of Term and Year Group Assemblies

End of term whole school assemblies also provide the opportunity to recognise achievement in the form of The Elmgreen Way awards, The Elmgreen Learner Awards, Attendance Awards (tutor group & College) and the Jack Petchey Awards. There is also the presentation of the Sports Day Trophy, following the annual whole school Sports Day that students and staff compete in. Weekly Year Group assemblies also provide opportunities for the celebration of student success.

The Elmgreen School Postcards and Phone Calls Home

Staff recognise consistent high levels of work and effort within lessons by sending Elmgreen Postcards home to students and families. Staff will also contact families through phone calls to recognise outstanding work or practice or to celebrate individual student success.

Headteacher’s Breakfasts

Each term students making the most academic progress in their Year group are invited to the Headteacher’s breakfast.

KS3, 4 & 5 Award Evenings

Provide subject specific recognition of students for progress and effort. Families are invited to attend evening award ceremonies.
