Waterstones Visit

Some of the best people to choose the books for our Library are the students.  We held a competition recently with the English Department, inviting students to think about which books might be best suited to readers in our school. Participants were asked to present their recommendations in front of their class, Ms Lord and the Library team.

We were looking for literature which could excite younger and older readers alike, books with exciting and unexpected plots, with memorable characters, books that come alive!   The prize was a shopping trip to Waterstone’s flagship store in Piccadilly as a reward for the best presentations.

9E4 put together some compelling presentations. They spoke passionately about their choices which covered adventure, love, tragedy, humour, thrillers, mysteries, historical fiction, science fiction and more.  So high was the standard of our students’ presentations that it was impossible to pick out individual winners. In the end we invited the whole class on a trip to Waterstone’s last Friday.

The Piccadilly branch is Europe's largest bookshop, comprising of eight floors and 8.5 miles of shelving.   The store’s expert booksellers were on hand to guide our students and to provide us with welcome drinks and biscuits.  The trip was a huge success.  The Waterstone’s staff singled out the students’ intelligent book choices and exemplary behaviour.   The new books are now in the Library; there is something for everyone so come along and see for yourself.
