Twitter has turned five

This week Twitter has turned five years old.

The social networking site that was founded by Jack Dorsey has had its fifth anniversary on the 22nd of March and has had over a billion tweets each year since its beginning.

The revolutionary website which like its similar networking sites Facebook has millions of users. From singers to actors, doctors to journalists’ even teachers use the $150 million profit making company to comment on the world and people around them.

Figures show there are more then 200 Million users and famous tweeters include Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Britney Spears. In the interviews we conducted, people admitted that celebrities they followed linked to their interests and made it more interesting e.g. Jenson Button the famous F1 driver was followed by people with a interest in driving or have a passion for football, arsenal footballer Jack Wilshire.

Recently the website has helped in the Middle East to promote the protesters in Libya and previously Egypt.

Messages such as:
"Libya is incredibly closed off, it's incredibly brutal, it's not comparable to Egypt or Tunisia in terms of how people can gather and protest. We just had to make sure that if something did happen that we were ready to get the news out, “
“To promote the use of Twitter to resolve conflict and to have other countries receive information.”
Well done Twitter you’ve done a lot for a 5 year old!
