Most students don’t know what an academy is. An academy in the education system in England is a type of secondary school which is independent of Local Education Authority control but is publicly funded, with possibly some private sponsorship.
Academies are established in a way that is intended to be “creative” and "innovative" in order to give them the freedoms considered necessary to deal with the long-term issues they are intended to solve.
The Governing Body of the school decided on the 24 January 2011 to proceed with an expression of interest to the Department of Education in converting to an academy without a sponsor, and one that retains the school name and ethos. This means that the school will work with the Department to consider the implications of a change of status and ultimately take a decision about whether to convert to an academy or not.
