Explosions could be heard throughout the night in many Libyan cities. Government forces are becoming ever more determined to stop the rebellion in its tracks. Many reports claim that they have been shelling areas outside a main hospital in Mistrata.
However they have faced many serious setbacks as Allied bombing continues. A British official has claimed that Gaddafi’s air force has been wiped out by bombing. Reports from Mistrata say that government tanks retreated after facing air strikes.
But it is obvious that Gaddafi has not been deterred as his tanks soon returned for more shelling. Many children have thought to be injured in fighting.
As well as the fighting in Mistrata the have been reports of explosions in the country’s capitol, Tripoli. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen a cloud of black smoke rising up from a military base, however these reports have not been confirmed. Tripoli has been the target for the Allied forces due to its importance to Gaddafi.
There has been much disagreement amongst allied leaders as to who should lead the assault on Gaddafi’s forces. The US is keen to lead an attack by NATO, but several NATO countries such as Turkey are very reluctant to lead an attack.
The UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon says both Gaddafi and the rebels should reduce the hostility shown towards each other.
