Humanities

From September 2009 the Elmgreen School will be introducing a Combined Humanities Curriculum for Year 7 students only. This will not reduce the number of Humanities lessons the students have but means that they will only have one teacher instead of potentially four different teachers for four different subjects of RE, Citizenship History and Geography. The emphasis will be to develop learning skills that will support the students through the rest of their school career and beyond and benefit all subject areas. It is also felt this will support the transition from Primary to Secondary school.

There will be a skills based introduction unit and then students will start to work on very detailed projects and research tasks through the rest of the academic year. Through these projects staff will introduce some of the key concepts and ideas that are subject specific but the primary emphasis will be to develop the students independent learning skills and ability to reflect on and improve their work. Each student will be issued with a learning journal or log to record the skills they have used or to reflect on how to improve. Students will be taught discrete subject areas from Year 8.

The course will be bespoke to The Elmgreen School and is being prepared and developed by an excellent and committed team of staff drawn from the Humanities subject areas. Research has also been undertaken at other schools and academies that have introduced similar Year 7 schemes.

An exciting project to enhance the learning experience of our young people and being supported through our Humanities specialism.
