Geography

The study of Geography at The Elmgreen School will aim to stimulate an interest in and a sense of wonder about places. We believe that Geography helps young people to make sense of a complex and dynamically changing world. It explains where places are, how places and landscapes are formed, how people and their environments are interconnected. It builds on pupil’s own experiences to investigate places at all scales, from personal to the global.

Geographical enquiry encourages questioning, investigation and critical thinking about issues affecting the world and people’s lives, now and in the future. Fieldwork is an essential element of this. Pupils learn to think spatially and use maps, visual images and new technologies to obtain, present and analyse information. Geography inspires pupils to become global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and their responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet.

The proposed GCSE programOCR Geography B specification helps put the student on the path to becoming a geography specialist by giving them the skills and knowledge relevant to the modern age. This qualification covers the four key themes of geography – rivers and coasts, population and settlement, natural hazards, and economic development.

"The GCSE Geography Edexcel B course provides students with a diverse and innovative content covering up to date topics"

Geography is unique in bridging the social sciences (human geography) with the natural sciences (physical geography) .

Geography puts this understanding of social and physical processes within the context of places and regions - recognising the great differences in cultures, political systems, economies, landscapes and environments across the world, and the links between them. Understanding the causes of differences and inequalities between places and social groups underlie much of the newer developments in human geography.
Geography provides an ideal framework for relating other fields of knowledge. It is not surprising that those trained as geographers often contribute substantially to the applied management of resources and environments.

Geography at the Elmgreen School

Geography at The Elmgreen School is about patterns and processes as well as crossing frontiers, centers and peripheries. It is about tourists, terrorists and refugees, about trade of food, clothes, drugs and digital data, about population growth, El Nino, tsunamis and earthquakes.  We who teach Geography at The Elmgreen School see Geography as the fascinating story of an ever-changing world and by striking a balance between theoretical and practical work in our lessons we aim to highlight this perception to our students. We want to encourage active involvement in the subject and inspire pupils to become global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and their responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet.

Topics covered at KS3 include ‘Hazards’, ‘Weather and Climate’, ‘Rivers & Coasts’, ‘Tourism’, ‘Population’ and ‘Natural Environments’.

At KS4 the Humanities Department will jointly offer various courses to meet the individual needs of our students. Geography in isolation will deliver the OCR B course. Understanding the causes of differences and inequalities between people and places underlie much of the newer developments in human geography and will be central to this course. Fieldwork will be a crucial part of this course.

Furthermore, The GCSE Geography Edexcel B course offered at KS5 will provide students with a diverse and innovative content covering up to date topics, while the accredited GIS (‘Global Information Systems’) programme which trains students in the use of computer software for  scientific investigation, resource management, and development planning – skills which in turn can reveal new information and lead to better decision making.

Geography is about the earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is, quite simply, about the world in which we live. Without geography you’re lost!
