Year 8 Students from The Elmgreen School have spent the day making the news!

Why should you sit in a chair when you can read like this?

This is photo competition with a twist. Recently, stories about literacy progress stalling have been all over the news. The theme of our competition is reading, but with a twist: We took pictures of teachers in our school reading in the craziest places ever. We had them upside down, getting distracted while doing drama even on the toilet!

Here in the UK the majority of children at school are expected to wear school uniform. But what’s the point of it?

FOR

A uniform assists the students achieve academically better. Students focus more on their education rather than on deciding what to wear. Let’s face it we’ve all seen the lack of focus that arises on own clothes day!  For example, a common conversation would run like this: “I’m so going shopping this weekend, I’m gonna get some nice air forces, then a Paul’s boutiques bag, OMG it’s so hard, what am I gonna wear, what are people going to say to me?” Besides eliminating distraction, uniforms force students to take school atmosphere more seriously.

Kids tend to be mocked by peers due to the type of garments they might wear. Consequently, uniforms decrease social clashes and violence in the schools. Not wearing a uniform could also knock down people’s confidence as they might not have a lot of money to buy a wardrobe full of designer clothes. Also kids will be commenting on how people are dressed and their style straight away, lowering that person’s self-esteem, So instead of people judging you on your appearance and straight away avoiding you, instead they can judge you on your personality and get to know you better if we're all wearing the same clothes. There can also be student rivalry when your friend ends up to be wearing a nicer thing then you and you boil with fury. So if we all wear the same thing, i.e. uniform, it takes away the feeling of envy between peers.

Having students all wear the same uniform or a uniform colour may develop a ‘team’ feel, reminding everyone from that we're all part of the same community and are one big team. Many professions require adults to wear a uniform, or a suit (which is really just grown up uniform/dress code isn’t it?) so wearing a uniform to school could be seen as a good preparation for the working world. Like adults who wear a uniform, students can ditch their uniform as soon as they’re “Off duty”.

It gives pupils a sense of belonging. It's equal, and stops children being bullied because of what they wear. The discipline of wearing uniform improves behavior and makes pupils proud of their school. It's practical and made to last, so in the long run it works out cheaper.

 AGAINST

It takes away the students’ right to take decisions for they are given the uniform and it will not show their personality.  t doesn’t let students feel  unique because the uniform represents the school and not the student.

School uniforms resist the need for the self expression of a kid. Sociologists call that it may cause unsuitable ways of expression by kids, such as offensive use of makeup and accessories.  Uniforms take away children's personality. The pressure on a uniform dress code in school holds the spirit of unity in diversity and its joy. In comparison to casual dress, school uniform proves to be no use and ineffectual once the student is out of school.

Five Top Tips For Success at The Elmgreen School.

By Betty, Rhiannon, Rhianna and Monet

1.    Be confident

Confidence is key. Not only does it make you feel good about yourself, it also means you can stand up for yourself. You can also have confidence in your work.

2.    Never lose focus

Stay focused and remember what you go to school for. Don’t let yourself get misguided into the wrong path.

3.    Go beyond your limit

Never ever set yourself limits, you can always do better then what you think you can. Try your best and even more. Anything is possible.

4.    Read

I know what you’re thinking, ‘NEXT point’ but, seriously read this. We used to hate reading but it seriously does help to read; it makes you sound a lot smarter when you can put the word idiosyncratic, sporadic or cumbersome into a sentence as if it was nothing. Reading is something to do when you’re bored, don’t just pick up your phone or grab your laptop, read. It’ll help in the long run.

5.    Stay positive

Coming into secondary school you may find some negativity in the air but remembering the positive about life can get you through it. Friends are very helpful in these situations because they will always stick by you and give you advice on how to overcome the problem you faced.

Sports Struggles: 2012 & School.

A woman who lost both legs in the London bombings on 7 July 2005 is to compete in the 2012 Paralympic Games.

Martine Wright, a 39 year old from Hertfordshire lost both her legs in the 7/7 tube bombings. She lost three quarters of her blood before getting rescued by an off-duty police officer. She then had to undergo 9 months of surgery before learning to walk again. Her team qualified for the Paralympics meaning that for the first time Great Britain will be playing in all the competitions.

"If you'd said to me 10 years ago: 'Martine, by the way, you're going to become an elite sportswoman who is going to maybe take part in the pinnacle of all events, you know the Olympics, the Paralympics', I would have told you that you were absolutely mad," she said.

"I was a real lucky one. It was awful to be part of that awful day but I was lucky because I survived to be able to create new dreams from something so negative."

This leads us to believe that too many young people are giving up their dreams of becoming athletes due to comparatively minor setbacks. But it’s not all down to the athletes. All academies for whichever sport, keep most players of their academy until they are 16 when they terminate their contracts, leaving them with shattered dreams, and a ruined education. Some are taken onto other clubs, but most have been fooled into a false belief of riches and fame playing for a professional sports team.

We interviewed a P.E teacher and two students at The Elmgreen School about overcoming obstacles in sport. We asked Ms Thomas whether she had had to overcome anything in sport. She said, "I got injured, I twisted my ankle by treading on a hockey ball, it worried me that I wouldn’t be able to play hockey again, but I faced my obstacle and got into my county’s hockey team."  A student called Alfred said, "when I was younger I was in a football team and not many people were in the team, we had 11 players so we had no substitutes. I badly injured my calf and had to keep playing through the game." Another student said, "I am in a girls football team, we got into the ‘David Beckham Academy’, however we lost one game so we also lost our place in the academy. Although, we kept motivated and being in a team helps because there is support all around you."

The Uglies

Tally Youngblood lives in a city where 16-year-olds receive an operation that makes them pretty. She is only a couple weeks away from joining her best friend Peris in Pretty Town. While she is waiting to become 16, she meets Shay an adventurous ugly who doesn’t obey the rules. Shay decides she doesn't want to become pretty and decides to run away to the Smoke, leaving Tally some clues written in code.

Just before her operation, she is threatened by Specials. She is to bring Shay back or never become pretty. Tally goes on a 7-day trip to the Smoke. There she falls in love with David, but accidentally activates a tracker that she brought with her. After breaking out of Special Circumstances, Tally decides to volunteer in testing an anti-pretty pill that could leave her brainless forever will she risk it!?

I highly recommend uglies to anyone looking for a thrilling dystopian read.  Its real page turner, I couldn’t put it down! The book takes you on a thought provoking journey where you found yourself questioning everything society has come to expect from young girls. Often today young girls suffer from lack of self esteem because they are bombarded by images shown to them by the media. In uglies this is to such an extent that girls get called by things they hate about themselves there nicknames for each other are things such as, Piggy, squint, Nose, spotty and other hurtful names you are stuck with this image of yourself until you become a pretty clone and are “beautiful” like everyone else.  It’s upsetting that it is a world they live in that slightly resembles our own with girls and even some boys want to get surgery to make themselves what is now considered pretty.

The book has very powerful messages and just the right amount of thrill and adventure. Tally is strong character and Uglies has an unusual way of making you wonder sometimes questioning her decisions even though it’s written from her point of view.

I stayed up all night reading it and it a truly excellent and extremely gripping book. You will really enjoy this book if you liked, The Hunger games by Suzanne Collins, Gone by Michael Grant and Maze Runner by James Dashner.  I cannot wait to start the sequel Pretties!

Stop Kony

Get Involved

If you have logged onto any social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter over the past few weeks, there is no way you will have missed the campaign by the organisation ‘Invisible Children’ to stop one man. Joseph Kony. At The Elmgreen School we have been trying to raise awareness and show that even young people like us are politically motivated and can make a difference.

Joseph Kony is the leader of a group in Uganda called the “LRA,” The Lord’s Resistance Army. They believe the country should be run on the 10 commandments; he stands accused of appalling crimes, including the kidnap of over 60,000 children over the past 20 years. Children of 10 years old are taught to kill, often beginning with their own families. If children do escape, they will never be the same again.

The LRA began its campaign of terror in northern Uganda more than 20 years ago however it has only started to become famous in the past few weeks, all because of one video. The film has been viewed more than 26m times since being uploaded to YouTube on Monday 5th March. It has almost 12m views on Vimeo, where it was first posted in February.

Through pressuring cultural and political leaders in the United States, ‘Invisible Children’ wants to convince the White House to continue its assistance to the Ugandan army in capturing Kony as last year the Obama sent 100 military advisers to Uganda. However, the US will only continue to support the case if the people of the world are behind them. The only way we can show this is on the 20th of April. On this day cities all around the world will come together and raise awareness by putting up thousands of posters, banners and leaflets to make Kony famous, not to celebrate him but so people support his arrest.

You can get involved by going to www.kony2012.co.uk and signing the pledge to stop Kony, once and for all.

The Woman in Black or the Woman in Bland?

For Radcliffe ‘The Woman In Black’ was an important step in his film career. He is clearly trying to get away from the ‘Harry Potter’ persona, sadly his lack of adaptability leaves Arthur a bit of a blank unfulfilled character.  Hammer Film Productions have had a hard time recently raking in enough cash to make a decent horror movie. They have officially made a comeback with this classic, if slightly unoriginal, adaptation of ‘Susan Hill’s’ book.

A young lawyer, struggling with work after the death of his wife, is sent to a remote village to settle the estate of a deceased eccentric woman who owns an English manor which is disconnected from reality. The village residents want him to leave as they are trying to conceal a deadly secret. He refuses, and soon discovers that the house of his client is haunted by the vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black.

Watkins (The Director) has succeeded in making a seemingly harmless country town into hell, the costumes are fantastically gothic and realistic at the same time so plus one for both points.

The only bad point of the horror side of the film is that it relies a bit too much on horror clichés,  faces in every window and old ladies creeping up behind people does get old, However I do admit that those ‘Clichés’ had me jumping more than once.

This simple film is actually very effective and a great film to see with friends, it will have you screaming in fear and laughing at yourself for doing so! On the whole a 6/10 movie.
