Admissions

The school received over 700 applications for the 180 school places available in September 2009. We are delighted that the school continues to be popular with the local community that it serves. Once places have been accepted and confirmed by Lambeth Admissions, the school will begin its induction process.

Criteria

The Elmgreen School will admit students using the Lambeth community and Voluntary Controlled secondary schools admission criteria.Places at The Elmgreen School are offered on the basis of preferences that are shown on the Common Application Form and are offered in accordance with the principles set out in the council's Equal Opportunities policy. Lambeth Children and Young People's Services (CYPS) will comply, wherever possible, with parents' wishes where they have expressed a preference for a particular school. However in cases of over-subscription, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  • Looked After Children. A 'looked after child' is a child who is in the care of a local authority or provided with accommodation by that authority - according to section 20 of the Children Act 1989.
  • Children with a brother or sister who already attends the school, and would not have left the school at the time of admission. A sibling is defined as a full/half/step brother or sister, living at the same address, a child who is living as part of the family by reason of a court order, or a child who has been placed with foster carers at that address as a result of being looked after by the Local Authority.
  • Children with a professionally supported medical or social need that the school is especially able to meet. Admissions decisions will be taken by Lambeth Children and Young People's Service (CYPS). Letters from an appropriate professional must support these applications although these will not always be conclusive.
  • Priority will be given on the basis of distance, measured by the shortest safe walking route between the child's home and the school. (The length of the journey between the child's home and the school by private car or public transport is not taken into account.)

Appeal arrangements

Unsuccessful applicants will have the right to appeal against the decision to an Independent Admissions Appeals Panel established under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998.
